What a Speech Language Pathologist treats...

Articulation and Phonological Disorders
Some children make mistakes as they learn to say new words. A speech sound disorder occurs when mistakes continue past a certain age. Speech sound disorders include problems with articulation, or making sounds and phonological processes, or sound patterns. Speech Language Pathologists can help diagnose and treat speech sound disorders.

Childhood Apraxia of Speech
Apraxia is a motor speech disorder that makes it hard for children to speak. To speak, messages need to go from your brain to your mouth. These messages tell the muscles how and when to move to make sounds. If your child has apraxia of speech, the messages do not get through correctly. It can take a lot of work to learn to say sounds and words better.

Stuttering
Talking to people can be hard if you stutter. You may get stuck on certain words or sounds. You may feel tense or uncomfortable. You might change words to avoid stuttering.

Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders
The study and treatment of oral and facial muscles as they relate to speech, dentition, chewing/bolus collection and swallowing.  This includes tongue thrust.

Language Disorders
Language problems may happen before your child starts school. Getting your child seen early is very important.
Some children have problems understanding, called receptive language.
They may have trouble:
-Understanding what people mean
-Following directions
-Answering questions
-Identifying objects and pictures
-Taking turns when talking with others

Some children have problems talking or expressing themselves, called expressive language.
They may have trouble:
-Asking questions
-Naming objects
-Using gestures
-Putting words together into sentences
-Using correct pronouns, like "he" or "they"
-Knowing how to start a conversation and keep it going

Many children have problems with both understanding and talking.

Some children have trouble with early reading and writing, such as:
-Holding a book right side up
-Looking at pictures in a book and turning pages
-Telling a story with a beginning, middle, and end
-Naming letters and numbers
-Learning the alphabet

Pragmatic Language Deficits
Deficits in social skills, also called pragmatic language are typically associated with Autism Spectrum Disorders. Your child may have problems using social skills to connect with other people. Your child may seem to be in their own world and it may be difficult for him/her to:
-share a common focus with another person about the same object or event, known as joint attention.
-play with others and share toys
-make and maintain friendships
-understand feelings

Voice Disorders
Some speech difficulties may be due to abnormal vocal quality due to its pitch, resonance, or loudness. Voice disorders can be caused by vocal abuse or misuse, and other medical issues. If a voice disorder is suspected it is best to consult with an ENT first to rule out any medical conditions.
